On the Bateson and Mead list. Sasak had not received an education (he could not speak Malay) and was very poor throughout his life. He made a living by selling his paintings and woodcarvings to tourists, harvesting coconuts and his wife's weaving. He also played in a gamelan orchestra (H. Geertz 1994: 111).
