'A favourite subject of ceiling paintings is the eagle Garuda surround by gods, an incident from the Adiparwa creation story, the first book of the Mahabharata. Showing the Balinese conception of direction and orientation, eight gods representing the cardinal points of the compass attack Garuda for stealing amerta, their water of immortality.'
