Description
Arjunasahasrabahu, the imprisonment of Rawana
Abstracted summary
The order of the narrative is from left to right. 1. Depicts Arjunasahasrabahu in the form of a monstrous pamurtian in battle with Rawana. To their right is a parekan pulling on Rawana’s right arm and two monsters and a second parekan in the lower left hand corner of the painting as we view it. The inscription reads: Syat Arjunawijaya/ ring segara/lawan sang Rawana/ sang Arjuna atriwingkrama/ kahejuk sang Rawana// “Arjunawijaya fights in the sea against Rawana. Arjuna has taken his triwikrama (pamurtian monstrous) form and Rawana is captured.” 2. In the following scene we see Rawana defeated and caged by Arjunasahasrabahu who appears in normal human form just above and to the right of the cage. On the lower left we see a white monster (?) staring into the cage at Rawana. Above the cage to the left and below beside the cage to the right we see the two parekan Twalen and Mredah still fighting with their demonic counterparts, Delem and Sangut. The inscription reads: ??Rawana kena ka krangkeng antuk sang arjuna/ ??? mangeling nunas ica ring sang arjunasahasrabahu ja/ “? Rawana is placed in an iron cage by Arjuna. ?? weeping he begs the help of Arjunasahasrabahu.” 3. In this next scene we see a pie-balled monster moving to the right in the direction of the narrative flow. The inscription reads: atata? muka krale/ ngawe upaya/ marupa wiku nangkil ri dyah Citrawati// mandaru saksama ??// “??? he takes on the form of a wiku and comes into the presence of Dyah Citrawati. ??” 4. The following scene depicts the scene in which the monster in the form of a priest talks with Citrawati, telling her that Rawana has killed ?Arjuna in battle. ??????sra? nguningan ring dyah Citrawati/ sang Arjuna kawon ayuda antuk sang Rawana/ sedih dyah Citrawati/ “???? tells Citrawati that Arjuna has been killed in battle by Rawana. Citrawati is sad.” 5. In this scene at the top we see Arjunasahasrabahu and below him Twalen looking down at his queen Citrawati who suicides in the belief that he, Arjunasahasrabahu, has been killed in battle with Rawana. Beside her is another woman who suicides with her. The text above Citrawati reads: Dewi Citrawati nuwuk raga/ kacingak antuk Sang Arjuna/ duk akayun sang Arjuna/ kayune ngurugang gumi desa ?// “Citrawati stabs herself, watched by Arjuna. Arjuna planns to cover her with earth.” Compare the kakawin Arjunawijaya 63.7 — 67 [ref PW 2005]
