Arjunasahasrabahu
|
| Abstracted summary |
The scene depicted here follows the sequence on E76379.
In it we see Arjunasahasrabahu in his pamurtian form cradling his wife by the side of the Narmada river. Note the depiction of the river below and to Arjunasahasrabahu’s right. The goddess to the left as we view the painting is the goddess of the Narmada river who revivies Citrawati. There seems to be another god(dess) to the right matching the first one. Who is the figure immediately below who kneels before Arjunasahasrabahu (a monkey or serpent?) Again the Balinese inscription at the centre top of the painting identifies the narrative action. It reads:
Sang Arjuna mamurti/ paksa matutug(ang)? gumi/ antun sedan ida dyah Citrawatine/ raris tedun hyang ni Narmada/ watek dewa/ nguripa(ng) sami
“Arjuna changes form. He compells the earth to bring to an end the death of Citrawati. Then the goddess of the Narmada descended and the gods all bring Citrawati back to life.” [ref PW 2005]
