Churning of the Ocean of Milk, or Pamuteran Mandara Giri
|
| Abstracted summary |
We have the usual representation of this narrative. The gods on the left as we view the painting and the demons on the right churn the milk ocean with the serpent, Basuki, wrapped about the Mandaragiri. We see the turtle below on which the mountain is supported and the god, Indra, seated on top to press down on it. Below him is the horse Uccaihsrava and the goddesses Sri and Laksmi together with Dhanwantari who carries the jar containing the amerta . Lower down we see the god Wisnu on the left hurling his discus at the god of the sea, Baruna, who attempted to flee to the underworld. On either side of the painting behind these latter two figures are four parekan, Twalen and Mredah on the left of the painting as we view it and Delem and Sangut on the right. Note what is going on the top right hand side of the painting. The serpent spits fiery poison over the demons and the god Indra sends rain to put out the flames [ref PW 2005]
