PJW: I need to check the story of Jarat Karu before I can identify the scenes in this painting. The story is to be found in the Adiparwa (Juynboll’s text pp23 - 29) In any case the painting is dominated by depictions of the punishments of hell (swarga) administered by Yama — a subject in which Balinese painting displays a great interest [ref PW 2005]
