Extended description
Brayut. The story of a peasant family. This Brayut painting stands out not only because it is a work of high quality probably dating from the mid-19th century, but also because it depicts a part of the Brayut story not usually shown. It shows Brayut going to a padanda boda, or a Buddha Brahman high priest, to receive consecration. In the upper right-hand corner Brayut is shown journeying to the priest's house. In the next scene the priest is shown performing his rituals, and the scene to the left of that shows the priest talking to Brayut, and then, in a small inset scene, Brayut journeying to (or perhaps from?) his meditation. The meditation is shown in the large scene on the left, where Brayut is in a grave-yard, surrounded by every known type of demon, including the upside-down demon Kala Sungsang. The rest of the bottom level of the painting shows Brayut, his wife and his children (he has eighteen of them) paying homage to the priest and his wives, demonstrating perhaps Brayut's success.;
