Extended description
Picture by Ida Bagus Made Tibah\nNOTES ON BACK BY GREGORY BATESON [WITH MY TRANSLATIONS IN BRACKETS]\nmekarja medoegel [doing the ritual of doegoel???] banten\ndaksina madaging ketipat pagaan and ketipat toeloed [the daksina offering which includes rice wrapped in banana leaf in the form of pagaan -- GB has a drawing which shows small flag-like appendages on a curving stick - see offerings on table at right-- and rice wrapped in banana leaf in the form of toeloed GB's drawing shows a triangle on a stick, also on the table at right].\nAlso banten pemeeg (peras adjoman, sesantoen) [another sort of rice offering]\nAt bottom of series of sawahs is panakanakan. [bringing forth fruit?] The picture shows kalih toeloek, i.e., belin tenah, a toeloek is a series of sawahs which the same water runs through, if the stream is divided and feeds 2 series - kalih toeloek [kalih = two]\nring sawah offering at pengalapan [harvest] in sanggah\ntjeroektjeroek [?]. Yen sane medoegoel dados mengangon bebek or meri (small ducks), not otherwise. [The one who is medoegoel (?), may have ducks or little ducks - eat in the sawah - but not otherwise.] At this stage the padi is 3 months old. It is as old as I am and strong enough so that the ducks will not harm it. Offerings done by Pekasih - klian of soebak.\nIdentifications: at top left: koeboe made by individual [hut to stay in while watching over the growing rice].\nTop right: bale timbang [a kind of pavilion] made by the soebak. Sira njambangin jeh, raoeh irika, nongosin jeh, apin tan wenten timpal maling jeh. [Whoever is watching over the water stays there, watching over the water so that no one will steal it.] This is done individually each one protecting his own interests - not ganti-ganti [in turns] club.\nLeft, center:\ttoengkoeb owned by soebak, for mesaba medoegel,\netc. [This is the name of the temple owned by the soebak association, for its rituals of mesaba and medoegel.]
