A dream of polite speech: the dreamer is reprimanded for using low Balinese to someone
|
| Abstracted summary |
"I was walking in the place called Tagllinggah -- there was a person in the field, just one person.
'How come you're alone here?' I said [speaking down]
' "Alone here!" Why do you talk so rudely to me!' he said [speaking down]. 'Don't you know how to ask politely, "who's here"?'
'I'm a Brahmana. that's how I speak,' I said.
And then he sicced the dog on me. I ran here and there -- almost was bitten -- I felt as though I hardly touched the ground as I ran. There was someone up above me running too, and I called to him, 'Come here to this tree!'" (transl Hildred Geertz)
