| Summary of collection |
The collection made by Gregory Bateson and Margaret Mead as part of their field work in Bali 1936-1939. The paintings and drawings were acquired through direct commission, supplemented by purchases from the Neuhaus brothers and the Pita Maha organisation. The majority of the artworks came from Batuan and Sanur. The collection was largely stored in the American Museum of Natural History for many decades, before Margaret Mead loaned it to Hildred Geertz for her research. It was subsequently sold, the Batuan paintings are still almost all together.
